Jinja/ Walukuba Off-Shore Intake Project.

Project Objectives:     The project aims at circumventing the effects of the lake level drop which exposed the raw water pipelines at the Jinja water works in the recent past.

Project Area:    Jinja Water Treatment Plant.

Consultant:       Beller Consult / M&E Associates

Project Cost:    Euro 2.4 million (UGX. 5.9Billion) excluding taxes.

Funding Agency:    AFD/NWS

Project Status:     

The contract was signed in March 2009 and construction works are expected to be substantially completed by March, 2010.

Entebbe Water Supply and Sewerage Expansion Project

Project Objectives:    

The project is aimed at rehabilitating and expanding both the Water and Sewerage systems in Entebbe.

Project Area:    Entebbe.

Project Cost:    Euro 17.9 million (UShs. 48.3 billion).

Funding Agency:    KfW/NWSC/GoU

Consultant:    Beller Consult GMBH/ M& E Associates/CES Consulting Engineers

Project Status:   
 
The project commenced in January 2005. The main component of the project was completed in June 2008.

The key components of the remaining varied works (VO 05) of the project included; the extension of water transmission mains to Kajjansi, to Akright-Kakungulu Housing Estate, to Garuga and sewer extensions for the new Entebbe domestic terminal and the Statehouse, construction of the reservoir for Akright-Kakungulu Estate.

The project has been successfully completed and was commissioned by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Uganda on the 4th of September 2009.

The project has resulted in a threefold expansion of water supply and sewerage systems in Entebbe town and the Entebbe-Kajjansi corridor, which will be able to serve the target population up to 2020 with a total water supply output of 20,000 cubic meters per day. 

The water supply system to the Akright-Kakungulu Estate and surrounding properties has been completed and tested and handed over to the Entebbe Area.  However, part of the intensification network was not laid due to a shortage of funds.  The pipes required to complete intensification of the network were procured and handed over to the area. Laying /installation is to begin / or continue.

Rehabilitation and Expansion of Gulu Water Supply and Sewerage Sytem

Project Objectives:     

The project is aimed at rehabilitating and expanding the water and Sewerage systems in Gulu.

Due to financial constraints, emergency works have been curved out as a stopgap measure to improve water supply while funds are identified for the complete project.

Project Area:        Gulu

Project Cost:    The full estimated cost of the project is Ushs.48 billion. Emergency Works Stage I costed UGX 3.0 bn.
The Stage II Works being implemented is at a cost of Ushs 6.7 billion.

Project Status:
    

Emergency Works Stage I

The scope of works involves laying of a 3.0 km of DN 300 mm Ductile Iron pipes for raw water pumping main, minor rehabilitation works at the water treatment plant and Gulu main office building. The whole scope of the works was completed and the project was concluded in November 2009.

Emergency Works Stage II (FY ending 2010)

The scope of the works involves; upgrading and replacement of some electro/mechanical plant at the raw water intake and the water treatment plant, some civil works at the water treatment plant, laying of 2.8 km of DN 500 mm steel pipe clear water pumping main to custom corner hill, construction of 5,300 m3 reinforced concrete reservoir at custom corner, replacement of selected distribution main
The construction works is to be substantially completed by end of April 2010.

Kampala Sanitation Program-Protection of Lake Victoria Phase 1

Project Objectives:    

The project aims to contribute to the reduction of anthropogenic pollution of the Lake Victoria in the vicinity of the Kampala urban areas, to contribute to the improvement of the living and sanitary conditions of the population living within the Nakivubo catchment in Kampala. The program will result: in decreasing pollution and nutrient discharge into the Inner Murchison Bay of Lake Victoria, improving the collection and treatment efficiency of the waterborne sewerage system, improving disposal and treatment of septic tank sludge and will demonstrate ways for a cost effective, hygienic and environmental-friendly collection, haulage and disposal of pit latrine sludge. Funding for the project has been earmarked by KfW (6 Million Euros), European Union water facility 6.995 Million Euros and NWSC/GoU 1.0 Million Euros.

Project Cost:          Euros 14 million (UShs. 37.8 billion)

Status:     

The consultant submitted the Final Design report for construction and Tender Documents. Procurement of the works contractor is underway. Bid opening is scheduled for 4th of February 2010.

Kampala Water Supply Network Rehabilitation Project

Project Objectives:     

The project aims at supporting Kampala Water Supply Service Area. The key objectives include;
•    Reduction of unaccounted for water (UfW).
•    Increasing the customer base
•    Strengthening the network in order to boost pressures in the remote areas and increase the viability of the Peri- Urban Extensions
•    Rehabilitation of the existing water production and supply systems

Project Area: 

The project covers Kampala City area with a land area estimated at 176 km2 and areas adjacent to Kampala City in Mukono and Wakiso Districts were also considered for bulky water supply. These areas are estimated at 715 km2.
   
Project Cost:         Euro 140 million (This is being reviewed)

Funding Agency:     KfW, NWSC

Status:

Activities carried out under the project include:
  • The consultant has reviewed the 2003 feasibility report for Kampala Network rehabilitation and has produced an in-depth analysis of the water production and supply systems and has proposed immediate and long term interventions
  • The draft final feasibility report was presented to NWSC and is being reviewed
    The proposed project components include;

•    Stage 1:
All Works associated with Gaba WTP Complex in order to upgrade its production capacity to 232,000 m3/d, including upgrading and rehabilitation of the Water Treatment Plant, associated transmission mains, primary, secondary and tertiary pipe work, reservoirs and booster stations. Also included in Stage 1 works will be the NRW Reduction Contract plus the SCADA System for Network Monitoring.

•    Stage 2:
All Works associated with the proposed new Katosi WTP with a capacity of 120,000 m3/d including, associated transmission mains, primary, secondary and tertiary pipework, reservoirs and booster stations. Also included in Stage 2 works will be the expansion of the SCADA System for Network Monitoring for this part of the Distribution System.

Mukono-Seeta Water Supply and Sanitation Project

Project Objectives:


Main objective is to improve the health and socio-economic situation and thereby the productivity of the people of Mukono/Seeta through the provision of safe drinking water and promotion of adequate sanitation.

Project Area:         Mukono-Seeta

Project Scope:

The project is being implemented in three phases. Phase one involved laying of 10Km of 400mm/300mm diameter transmission main and 35km of distribution pipeline. Phase I was completed. Phase two is currently ongoing and involves construction of the Mutungo-Namanve transmission line, four reservoirs and the associated hydraulic connections, a booster station, and a preliminary distribution network. Phase three will concentrate on the intensification of the distribution network and installation/construction of a sewerage system.

Project Cost:            Ushs.14.Billion (Phase 2).

Contractor:              Vambeco Enterprises Ltd

Status:                 

The projected was completed on 6th February 2009 and it’s under a one year Defects Liability Period which ends in February 2010.

Kampala Urban Poor Project – Ndeeba/ Kisenyi Parishes

Project Objectives:

The project aims at addressing the water supply and sanitation needs/challenges of the urban poor residing in the informal settlements of Kisenyi I, Kisenyi II and Ndeeba Parishes in Kampala.

Project Area:          Kisenyi I, II and Ndeeba Parishes in Kampala.

Project Cost:          Ushs 5.6 Billion

Funding Agency:    KfW/NWSC

Consultant:             Beller Consult/M&E

Contractor:             Vambeco Enterprises Ltd

Project Status:

The works include supply, installation and repair of water pipes, supply and installation of the pre-paid metering system, and all related civil works, and construction of public and private sanitation facilities as well as drainage civil works. The project was substantially completed in December 2008.

The Information, Education and Communication (IEC) component of the project is underway, to sensitise and mobilise members of the community about the newer convenient services offered by NWSC that are available for their use ongoing.

The project was concluded in December 2010 and plan is under way to upscale to other areas.

Kampala Urban Poor Project – Kagugube Parish

Project Objectives: 


To improve the living conditions of the urban poor living in informal settlements in Kagugube Parish in Kampala.

Develop effective delivery systems and sustainable management systems for the public stand posts for the urban poor.

Project Area:    

The project covers 5 zones of Kivulu 1&2, Industrial Area, Kagugube and Kitamanyangamba out of the 7 zones in the parish. The target population is in the range of 13,000-15,000 people.

Project Cost:   Euro 800,000  (Ushs 2.2 billion)    

Funding Agency:     African Water Facility of the African Development Bank.

Status:       

The construction works are complete. The project is currently under a one year defects liability period and the major project outputs include ;
•    Support to the Urban pro-poor unit in NWSC (UPPU) to co-ordinate the programme.
•    Construction of household and communal sanitation facilities using innovative technical options (including Econ-san).
•    9 Kms’ of water mains
•    25 pre-paid meters (similar to those in Kisenyi/Ndeeba)
•    100 yard taps ( normal meters similar to house connections but installed in peoples compounds)
•    25 toilet facilities (of which 2 are flush, 18 VIPs, 4 are double vault and 1 ECOSAN
•    Implementation of the hygiene Education Campaign using IEC materials

Bushenyi Water Supply Project

Project Objectives:     To rehabilitate and expand the water supply and sanitation systems in Bushenyi

Project Area:      Bushenyi

Project Cost:      UGX. 2.5BN (Emergency works)

Consultant:         Kagga & Partners

Funding Agency:        NWSC

Status:     

The project is being implemented in two phases:

•    The Emergency Works, aimed at addressing the immediate water needs of Bushenyi Town involving rehabilitation and expansion of the water treatment system, laying of a 3km DN 200mm transmission main, and construction of a new 270 m3 water storage reservoir.

•    The major works will entail construction of a new Water Treatment Plant at Kitagata and Sewerage systems for Bushenyi and Ishaka. It is hoped that, emergency measures will increase the water supply capacity from 640 m3/day based on 16 hours of pumping to about 2,000 m3/day. It is projected that a total of 637 new connections will be made over the contract period increasing coverage to an estimated 4,000 people.

For major works, the supply capacity will increase by 8,750 m3/day based on a 25 year design horizon. The cost of the major works is estimated at UShs.15.5 Bn.

Currently, the emergency works project is nearing completion, and technical handover is scheduled in January 2010 and most of the components have been tested and are already in use.

Arua Water Supply and Sanitation Project

Project Objectives:  
  

The project aims at improving to avail quality treated water from the treatment plant, increased production to meet the demand for the next 15 to 20 years. The immediate interventions involved construction to replace / or upgrade old filter units, construction of contact tank at the Water Treatment Plant. Emergency works involves rehabilitation and upgrading the water waterworks.

Collection and safe disposal of wastewater which will involve development of the sewer system and waste water treatment plant.

Project Area:            Arua

Project Cost:            USD 17.0 million

Funding Agency:      NWSC

Status:    
•    Arua Treatment Plant Project 
The construction works on a 36 m2 reinforced concrete gravity filter and a new 91 m3 contact tank commenced in the FY 2007/2008 and was substantially completed in July 2009 and the system is fully operational and under defect liability period which will be ending in the end of January 2009.
Project Cost:   UGX 518 million
•    Arua Emergency Water Supply Project

During the FY 2009/2010, a study, engineering design and tender documentation is to be achieved and works started.
Final design report and tender document will be available by end of January 2010. Procurement of supervision consultant and works contractor is to be done from February 2010.

The works contract will include refurbishment of the water treatment plant, clear water pumping main, constructing additional service reservoir and the distribution system replacement and upgrading.

•    Arua Water Supply and Sanitation System Project (Major works)

Sourcing for funding for the major works that include studies is ongoing and the sanitation component.

Gaba Off-Shore Intake Project

Project Objectives:     The project aims at negating the effects of the high level of pollution in the Inner Murchison Bay, and the sudden fall in the Lake Victoria levels at the Gaba Water Treatment Plant.

Project Area:   Gaba Water Treatment Plant.

Consultant:      Pφyry Environment GmbH

Project Cost:    Euro 6.5 Million (Ushs...........)

Funding Agency:  KfW, AFD and NWSC

Status:     

The contract for construction works was signed in March, 2009 with Sogea/Satom. Currently earth works, route surveying, water quality analysis activities are undergoing.
