The National
Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) requires $25m (about sh40.5b) to
provide water and other sanitation services to the urban poor, the
managing director has said.
While guiding German parliamentarians in Kisenyi and Ndeeba recently,
Dr. William Muhairwe said the services would be provided under the
Water and other Sanitation Services (WATSAN) programme for the urban
poor.
“The goal is to increase access to WATSAN services to 100% of the
population living in informal settlements. A total of $6m (about
sh9.7b) has been invested in the mentioned parishes.” “Efforts to
mobilise additional financing are going on,” he said.
Muhairwe said the increasing number of urban dwellings around Kampala
over the past 10 years was a challenge to NWSC.
“This can be seen through the high incidences of hygiene and
sanitation-related diseases. The diseases break out especially in the
informal settlements. The sewered area of Kampala serves about 7% of
the population,” he added.
Muhairwe said 93% of the urban poor rely on various forms of on-site
sanitation. He said studies carried out by NWSC identified over 20
informal settlements requiring WATSAN services.
Muhairwe explained that the studies adopted a step-by-step approach to
the problem, which would allow continuous improvement of the WATSAN
programme.
Muhairwe said: “This included use of appropriate and innovative
technologies, formation of an urban pro-poor unit and equipping the
unit with specialised skills to ensure effective delivery of services.”
The managing director said they aim at shifting from the previous
supply-driven to tailor-made, pro-poor approaches. |
