Masaka Area

Profile

Masaka town is located in southern Uganda, approximately 130km southwest of Kampala. National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) took over the water supply and sewerage services of the town in 1987 after major rehabilitation works. The water treatment plant is located approximately 5km from town on river Nabajjuzi, a swamp river whose raw water is acidic and contains a lot of iron, which increases the cost of purification to meet WHO standards.

In 1987 National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) took over from the Directorate of Water Development an old water works with a water treatment capacity of 3,000m³ per day.

In 1994 a water treatment laboratory was installed with full time staff based at the water works to carry out tests on the water and ensure and maintain the required standards. For tests such as bacteriological quality, water samples are sent weekly to NWSC Kampala central laboratory for further analysis.

In June 1997 NWSC built a new water works with a capacity of 5,000m³ per day. The old water works were rehabilitated to restore the design capacity of 3,000m³ per day and is still used to supply water to some parts of Masaka town. The total capacity of Masaka water treatment works is now 8,000m³ per day, though only 44% of that capacity is utilized.

The Area has a water distribution piped network coverage of 218km and over 5,943 customer water accounts.

Fort Portal Water Supply Service Area:

Profile
The water supply system in Fort portal Municipal Council is still relatively new and was rehabilitated and expanded in 1996 by DWD with financial support from KFW (Germany) before operations were handed over to NWSC in 1997.

We started with operations within the Municipality, an area of 27.82 km² and over the years, our services have been extended to peri- urban areas of Kasinde, Bulyanyenje, Musoma, Kiamara Tea Factory and Mpanga Tea Growers Factory about 15 kms from the Town centre. We have two offices; Customer care and cash office at plot 11/13 Kaboyo road and the Administrative /Technical offices at Kabundaire water works.

The service area has piped network coverage of about 102kms, sewerage network coverage 1km and 3,252 customer water connections

  • Population served------------------------------------42,000
  • Percentage of population served with water-------81%

Water Supply System
Water Treatment in Fort Portal comprises of raw water abstraction from river Mpanga followed by conventional water treatment process of coagulation using Alum, sedimentation, rapid sand filtration and disinfections using chlorine (HTH). There is a laboratory at the treatment plant to monitor water quality and ensure compliance with National and WHO guidelines for drinking water.

The plant has a capacity of 2200m³/day and plant capacity utilization at present is about 64%.

Water Distribution
The treated water is pumped to Njara reservoirs where water is distributed to the distribution network by gravity. Booster pumps at Kagote and Harukoto supply areas like Muhooti barracks, Katojo prisons, and Palace ring. We provide water supply 24 hrs a day. Our reservoir has a capacity of 1400m³ and is at present adequate to balance demand and supply.

Sewage Collection, Treatment and Disposal
Household wastewater is collected through a 1.1km main sewer line to a communal septic tank and sewage lagoons located at Babiiha road at Kisenyi next to the bus park respectively. Sewage lagoons consist of two anaerobic ponds in parallel, followed by a facultative pond and finally the maturation pond. Treatment is by natural physical- biological process and is very effective as the effluent normally meets NEMA discharge requirements.

The design capacity of the sewage treatment plant is estimated at 55m³/day or 1600m³/month.

Entebbe - Kajjansi Service Area

Profile
Entebbe – Kajjansi service area stretches from Segguku, 8 Km along Kampala - Entebbe road, to Entebbe International Airport, 34 Km south of Kampala in Wakiso District. The area head offices are located at Plot 6 Lugard Avenue on the way to the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, while the Kajjansi branch offices are located at plot 140 Kajjansi Trading Centre.

The estimated population in the service area is 217,000 (Kajjansi – 47,000) people consisting mainly of civil servants and immigrants from other districts and countries. The current service coverage is 67% and average family size is 8 persons per family resulting in 5,896 families served.

The total area served is 50 Km² and 2 Km² for water and sewerage respectively. There are 9218 customers connected to our water network and 109 to the sewerage system.

The geographical areas covered by our water network are as follows: to the North along Entebbe Kampala road, our water extends up to Segguku , while in the west we go up to the areas of Nakiwogo, Kiwafu and Kitooro. In the North West we cover areas of Namate, Katabi and Busambaga and in the southwest we serve areas beyond the Entebbe International Airport like Kigungu and Misooli.

Our sewer systems, drains part of Town center down along Airport road to our waste stabilization ponds at Kitooro. Other areas covered by our sewer services are Fire Quarters, Survey Quarters, Windsor Lake Victoria Hotel and State House. Attached are maps showing the geographical location of the service area.

Our customers include big government ministries like State House, Police and Defence, Hotels like Imperial Botanical Beach, Imperial Resort Beach, Windsor Lake Victoria, Institutions like Nkumba University, Merryland High School, St. Mary’s Kitende, Uganda Clays, Mildmay International among others, Parastatals like Civil Aviation Authority (Entebbe International Airport and Kajjansi Airfield), National Medical Stores etc. We also serve local authorities such as Entebbe Municipal Council, and domestic consumers.

The local population also earns from commercial fishing especially in the areas of Kitubulu, Kasenyi, Nakiwogo and Kigungu landing sites, and clay products mainly in Kajjansi. Other commercial activities include flower growing (e.g. Wagagai Flowers, Victoria Flowers, Rosebud etc.) and small business units.

To meet our customer demands, the area has a total workforce of 58 well-trained staff. These handle tasks of water production and treatment, water distribution, network maintenance and extension, general administration (cleaning, staff training, staff welfare), commercial activities such as marketing, billing, collection etc., as well as accounts and finance activities such as budgeting, payroll, budget controls etc.

Entebbe Area is supplied from a water treatment plant located at Bugonga/Kakeeka bay, and produces on average 8,500m³ of water per day against an estimated demand of 9,500 m³ per day. Kajjansi branch is supplied 730 m³ per day by Gaba Water works, Kampala.

To cater for interruption in supply, the area has storage facilities located at Nsamizi hill (4,680 m³) and Kitende hill (108 m³). A new treatment plant is currently under construction to supply both Kajjansi and Entebbe.

The major problems faced by the area are: old and limited treatment plant of capacity 8,500m³ per day compared to demand of 9,500m³, old and limited storage facility of only 4,680m³, some very old portions of the network which often give way, one set of stabilization ponds which, by nature of their location and the landscape of the area, can only drain a small portion of the area.

The Corporation is addressing these problems through construction of a new treatment plant and reservoirs, replacement of old network and carrying out some mains extension, now in advanced stages. These works are scheduled for completion by end of year 2006. The biggest threat the area faces is existence of abundant alternative sources of water especially Lake Victoria and various wells.

Our products and/or services
There are three services offered by NWSC in Entebbe/Kajjansi area and these include: supply of treated water (piped and tankered water), sewerage services (only existent in Entebbe) and water quality testing services especially to Entebbe Handling Services Ltd. We always ensure that the quality of our final water at our treatment plant adheres to World Health Organization (WHO) standards.

The water network totals to 136 Km and 56 Km for Kajjansi while that of sewerage totals to 4.8 Km.

Vision
Inline with NWSC Corporate vision of being “A pride of Water Sector in Africa” the vision of Entebbe-Kajjansi Area is “To be excellent service providers in Africa emphasising worker and customer satisfaction and environmental protection”.
